From Ten Rupees to a Month of Groceries: A Learning Journey at Flipside Workspace

At Flipside Workspace, we believe that real learning begins in the real world. One of our most meaningful activities recently started with something as small and powerful as a ten-rupee coin.

We took our students to a small, local kirana store with a simple task: explore what all you can buy for just ten rupees. It wasn’t just about the money, it was about the mindset.
What does ten rupees mean in today’s world? What choices does it offer? What are the trade-offs?
As they browsed through the shelves and spoke to the shopkeeper, some picked a small packet of biscuits, others discovered a single sachet of shampoo or a handful of toffees. Every purchase sparked curiosity and conversation.

Armed with this experience, the students made conversations with their mentors/ teachers and reflected on what essentials they could find in the tiniest of budgets. And from there, the journey grew.

This exercise became the starting point for our monthly grocery planning sessions. From the kirana store, we moved to bigger supermarkets. The students were now thinking not just about price, but about quantity, quality, need, and value. They compared brands, made lists, checked expiry dates, and discussed what their homes really needed.

This is what learning looks like at Flipside. Not from textbooks, but from doing. From standing in line, counting change, speaking with shopkeepers, and thinking through their own decisions.

The video we’re sharing captures a glimpse of this process, the laughter, the learning, and the small moments of confidence being built one rupee, one list, and one trip at a time.
