Building Independence Through Navigation Skills at Flipside Workspace

At Flipside Workspace, we believe that true learning is measured not just in grades, but in the confidence to move through the world independently. One of the key life skills we focus on with our young adults is navigation, knowing how to get from Point A to Point B safely, confidently, and with awareness.

We begin this journey by introducing our students to apps like Uber. They learn how to open the app, pin their location, choose the right ride option, estimate the fare, and book the ride.
But it doesn’t stop there. We teach them how to check the driver’s details, how to identify the car correctly, and what to do once inside. We practice polite, brief communication with the driver, and most importantly, how to track the route and keep an emergency contact informed. Safety is at the heart of every step.

Parallelly, we take them through the process of using public transportation, specifically the metro. They learn to locate the nearest metro station, approach the ticket counter or kiosk, and buy the appropriate token or card.
Then comes the actual practice: scanning the ticket, passing through the turnstile, reading metro maps, and waiting at the platform mindfully. We show them how to board and deboard the metro the right way, how to identify the correct exit, and how to handle crowd situations calmly.

Each part of this training is not just about travel, it’s about confidence, safety, awareness, and decision-making. Our young adults gradually begin to see the city as accessible to them, not intimidating. They learn what to do when something doesn’t go as planned, how to ask for help if needed, and how to always keep their safety in focus.

These skills may seem simple to many of us, but for our learners, they are giant steps towards independence.

Through these experiences, we are not just teaching navigation, we are helping them navigate life itself.
