Our Journey and Core Team

How we started

The Flipside Workspace was born out of a deep need to provide purpose and independence to young adults with diverse learning needs. Its journey began with Urmila Hemmadi, a dedicated special educator and mother, who founded Dys and That, an after-school program supporting students with learning challenges like dyslexia. Over the years, Urmila observed that while her students overcame academic hurdles, many struggled with a lack of direction and purpose post-graduation, particularly those with mild autism or intellectual disabilities.

Motivated to bridge this gap, she envisioned a space where these individuals could thrive, learn critical life skills, and transition smoothly into adulthood. In 2022, this vision became a reality with the founding of The Flipside Workspace, a nurturing and inclusive environment focused on empowering young adults to discover their potential and lead fulfilling lives. Guided by a passionate team, the organization continues to inspire transformation through mentorship, skill-building, and real-world opportunities.

The Founder, Special Educator

Urmila Hemmadi

The Flipside Workspace was founded by Urmila Hemmadi, a dedicated mother and special educator with over 20 years of experience. Her journey began with the creation of Dys and That, an after-school program designed to support students aged 5 to 25 with diverse learning needs, particularly those facing challenges like dyslexia.

As Urmila witnessed her students complete their secondary education—some even struggling to reach that milestone—she became acutely aware of the mental health issues that arose from a lack of purpose in life. Many young adults with mild autism and intellectual disabilities found themselves at a crossroads after graduation, often feeling aimless and disconnected, either remaining at home or taking on unfulfilling jobs.

In the rush to support their children academically, parents frequently overlooked the vital life skills necessary for independence. Urmila believed wholeheartedly that these individuals deserve a sense of purpose and can thrive when equipped with the right skills.

In 2022, she established The Flipside Workspace to provide a safe and nurturing environment for young adults to explore their potential. With a passionate commitment to empowering this community, The Flipside Workspace is guided by Urmila Hemmadi and mentored by Dr. Manoj Kuriakose. Together, we strive to transform lives through skill development, self-discovery, and a renewed sense of purpose.
